There’s no doubt that Nutmeg is one of my favourite spices. I love it and use it a lot. Though you can buy it already ground I still grate it myself on an as needed basis. You’ll find it as an ingredient in all my baked recipes, like Coconut Toto, and it even makes an appearance in my Jerk Sauce recipe! I also like to use it in porridge and Jamaicans even sprinkle it in drinks like soursop juice.

Nutmeg is a spice that all Jamaicans and other Caribbeans are very familiar. Grenada is perhaps better known for nutmeg than Jamaica, however, you can find nutmeg trees growing all over the island. The seed from the tree (Myristica fragrans) is called nutmeg and the red aril covering the seed is called mace.

There’s nothing like the fragrance of freshly grated nutmeg. It doesn’t surprise me that nutmeg is now being used as a scent in colognes! If you’ve never bought nutmeg seeds and grated them yourself I highly recommend it. I have a grater just like the one in the photo with a compartment to store half grated seeds.

In our family cooking is a loving gesture. Our mission is to spread that love around the world by sharing our beloved family recipes. Our Jamaican recipes have been passed down for generations, are easy to prepare and very authentic! We know you'll love them. Enjoy!
