Plantain chips are so easy to make at home! If you’re not familiar with plantains you’ve come to the right place. Yes, they’re from the banana family but they definitely not the same. Firstly, you cannot eat plantains raw. They need to be cooked to be enjoyed. Secondly, they are much larger than the average banana. So when you see them you’ll know that’s not a banana. Lastly, their skin is thicker and more difficult to remove than the skin of a banana, but we’ll explain how to remove it with ease.
To make Plantain Chips you need to use green plantains. Just slice them thinly, cook them in hot oil, and voila crispy plantain chips! Add a little salt and you have a homemade snack! With dips like our Ackee Dip Recipe, these chips are also a delicious substitute for crackers or potato chips.
Again, the trick to making crispy plantain chips is using green plantains. The greener the better. Do not attempt to make them with yellow-skin plantains they will not be crispy.
1. Cut off ends of plantains and score skin along one side
2. Place plantains in warm water and soak for 5 minutes; remove skin
3. Use a mandolin or hand-slice the plantain thinly
4. Heat 1 cup (250 mL) cooking oil in pot or skillet; fry chips in batches until crispy; 1 to 3 minutes depending on thickness
5. Sprinkle with salt and set aside to cool
