I recently came across this video from a travel show called Bizarre Foods. I thought it was funny that the show features Jamaican food, but I guess one man’s normal is another’s bizarre. In the video they feature a “bushman” who does rustic cooking in … the bush. He’s actually a rasta named Wolde Selassie who cooks vegetarian patties and something called Blue Drawers. I have no idea where the name blue drawers comes from, and have had no luck finding out. However, if I do, I’ll make sure to let you know.
Also called Duckunoo, blue drawers is of West African origin and is a boiled pudding made of cassava, cornmeal, coconut milk, raisins, sugar and spices. (Some recipes use green banana and sweet potato instead of the cassava and cornmeal.) Individual servings of the mixture are wrapped in banana leaves, tied and boiled in hot water. It’s actually a sweet pudding very similar to the Cornmeal Pudding recipe that I recently added to the site. Check out the video, which features a few other (not so) bizarre Jamaican foods.
